Sample Standard Deviation Formula

About Sample Standard Deviation Formula

Let's look at when we use the sample standard deviation formula before understanding it. In practise, when the population size N is big, obtaining value xi for each observation in the population becomes challenging, making it impossible to determine the population's standard deviation (or variance). In such instances, the standard deviation can be estimated by computing it on a sample of size n drawn from a population of size N.

The sample standard deviation is the name given to this calculated variance (S). Because a sample standard deviation is a statistic derived from a small number of people in a reference group. Because the sample has more variability than the population, the sample's standard deviation is usually always higher.

Standard deviations are divided into two categories: population standard deviation and sample standard deviation. We divide by n, the number of data values, to get the population standard deviation. We divide by n -1, or one less than the number of data values, to get the sample standard deviation. The sample standard deviation formula for the random variable x, given a sample of data (observations), is

S = 1n-1i=1n(xi - x¯)2

  • Here,
  • x? = sample average
  • x = individual values in sample
  • n = count of values in the sample
Population Standard Deviation σ = (xi-μ)2n
  • μ = Population Average
  • x = Individual values in population
  • n = Count of values in population
Sample Standard Deviation S = (xi- x¯)2n-1
  • x? = Sample Average
  • x = Individual values in sample
  • n = Count of values in sample

The sample standard deviation is calculated as follows:

  • Determine the average (simple average of the numbers).
  • Subtract the mean from each integer and square the result.
  • Add all of the squared results together.
  • Divide this sum by one less than the total number of data points (n - 1). This provides us with the sample variance.
  • The sample standard deviation is calculated by taking the square root of this value.
