Udham Singh's birth name was Sher Singh Sandhu. He was born on December 26, 1899, in the village of Sunam in the Sangrur district of Punjab (now in India). After his parents died when he was young, he and his elder brother Mukta Singh were sent to an orphanage run by the Central Khalsa Orphanage in Amritsar, where they were baptized as Sikhs in 1917. During this ceremony, Sher Singh was renamed Udham Singh and his brother became Sadhu Singh.

Throughout his revolutionary life, Udham Singh used multiple aliases to evade British authorities and travel internationally. Some of his known aliases included "Mohammad Singh Azad," "Ram Mohammad Singh Azad," and "Ude Singh." The name "Ram Mohammad Singh Azad" was particularly significant as it symbolized Hindu-Muslim-Sikh unity—a powerful statement about his secular nationalist beliefs and the inclusive nature of India's freedom struggle. He also went by "Frank Brazil" during some of his travels. The surname "Azad," meaning "free" in Urdu and Hindi, reflected his commitment to India's independence. He was known as Udham Singh at the time of his arrest, trial, and execution in London in 1940.
