What are Biosphere Reserves?
A reserve which is a vast land containing either a terrestrial or a coastal ecosystem is called a Biosphere Reserve.
This area protects the natural flora and fauna of an area as well as an entire ecosystem and its human culture. It also protects indigenous tribes of the region.
A biosphere reserve is a protected territory. It can have a national park as well as a wildlife sanctuary within it.
For example, the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve consists of one national park named
Satpura and two wildlife sanctuaries named Bori and Pachmarhi.
What are Endemic Species?
The species that are found in a particular area are called Endemic Species. Biosphere reserves have endemic species. A particular plant or animal may be endemic only to a zone, area, region or country. These species are closely dependent on the environment.
When some foreign species are added to this zone, the endemic species will be threatened. They can even cause vast damage to the endemic species. Thus, Biosphere reserves are very complex protected areas which not only help the flora and fauna but also help protect the culture of a region.
