Red soil is also known as what?

Red soil, also known as Omnibus soil due to its distinctive red hue from ferric oxide, is primarily found in the eastern and southern regions of the Deccan plateau, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, and parts of the southern middle Ganga plain. It’s excellent for cultivating crops like wheat, pulses, tobacco, oilseeds, and potatoes. This soil has some unique characteristics:

Physical properties of red soil:

  • It’s rich in iron oxide and has a porous structure.
  • Its pH level typically falls between 6.6 and 8.0.
  • However, it contains lower levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and organic matter.
  • Interestingly, red soil doesn’t readily respond to fertilizers and is generally considered less fertile for farming.
