The arithmetic means the formula is used to calculate the mean or average of numbers and to determine the data's central tendency. It can also be defined as the total number of observations divided by the sum of all the given observations. Let's look at some solved cases of the arithmetic mean formula.

What Is Arithmetic Mean Formula?

To find the arithmetic mean of a set of observations, simply add them all and divide the total number of observations by the total number of observations. To compute the mean set of observations, use the arithmetic mean formula:

The arithmetic mean is calculated by dividing all observations by the number of observations.

Arithmetic mean = x? = Σxi/ n

Here i varies from 1 to n.

For grouped data: Arithmetic mean = x? = Σfxi/ n

Here, f is the frequency in each class

Example of the arithmetic mean formula:

Example 1: In a class test, eight pupils scored 10, 19, 12, 21, 18, 20, 11, and 19. What is the arithmetic mean of the

students' final grades?

Sol: Arithmetic mean of the marks obtained by the students by using the arithmetic mean formula,

Arithmetic mean = (10 + 19 + 12 + 21 + 18 + 20 + 11 + 19) ÷ 8

= 16.25

Example 2: Five students are 164 cm tall, 134 cm tall, 155 cm tall, 156 cm tall, and 172 cm tall, respectively. Calculate the average height of the students.

Sol: Mean height of the students by using the arithmetic mean formula,

Arithmetic mean = (164 + 134 + 155 + 156 + 172)/5

= 781/5 = 156.2 cm

Answer: Mean height of the students = 156.2 cm.
