About Formula to Find x Intercept

We'll go over what x-intercept is before learning the formula for finding it. The x-intercept of a function is the point(s) on the x-axis where the function's graph meets. Every point on the x-axis has the same y-coordinate, which is 0. This is used to derive the x-intercept formula.

What is the formula for calculating the x-intercept?
The x-intercepts of a function are sometimes known as the function's zeros. Consider the function y = f(x). We are already aware of:

  1. The x-intercept(s) is/are the point(s) on the x-axis where the graph meets.
  2. The y-coordinate of a point on the x-axis is 0.

To obtain a function's x-intercept, just put y = 0 into its equation and solve for x value (s).
If the values of x are x1,x2,x3,...... then the x-intercepts are (x1,0),(x2,0),(x3,0),...... In the next section, we'll look at how to use the formula to obtain the x-intercept.

Solved Examples of Finding x Intercept Using Formula

Example: Find the x-intercept of the function y = x2- 7x + 10.
Sol: To determine the x-intercept using the formula, we simply substitute y = 0 in the above equation and solve for x.
0 = x2- 7x + 10
0 = (x - 2) (x - 5)
x - 2 = 0; x - 5 = 0
x = 2; x = 5
