Percent Difference Formula

About Percent Difference Formula

The percent difference formula calculates the change in value's absolute value. We calculate the absolute value of the ratio of their difference to their average multiplied by 100 for any two integers that belong to the same category. Let's look at how to use and calculate the percent difference formula.

What is percent difference formula?

The percentage difference formula determines the difference between two percentage-based figures. The percent difference is calculated by multiplying the difference in their values by 100. We calculate the absolute difference between the two values because the order of the integers doesn't matter. To minimize confusion when picking the initial and final values for the denominator, we calculate the average of the values as a reference value.

Percentage difference formula

For two values, a and b, the percent difference formula is:

Percent Difference=Absolute difference between the two values average of both values×100%

Percentage Difference=a-ba+b2×100

The difference between any quantity's initial and final values after a modification can also be calculated using the percentage difference formula. Using the same formula as before, 'a' represents the beginning value and 'b' represents the final value. Using the flowchart below, we can learn how to find the percentage difference formula

Solved example of a Percent difference formula

Example 1 : Certain height is increased from 30 ft to 60 ft. Find the per cent difference.

  • Solution: The initial height a = 30 ft. The final height b = 60 ft
  • Using the percentage difference formula
  • [|(60-30)|/(60+30)/2]× 100
  • = [30/45] ×100
  • = 66.66%

Example 2: Find the percent difference if sarthak wrote 53 instead of 35.

  • Solution: The given two numbers are:
  • a = 35 and b = 53.
  • Using the percentage difference formula
  • [|(35-53)|/(35+53)/2] × 100
  • = [|-18|/44]100
  • = 40.9%
