About Subtraction
The process of subtracting one number from another is known as subtraction. It's a basic arithmetic operation that's represented by the minus sign (-) and is used to calculate the difference between two numbers.
What do you mean by Subtraction?
Subtraction is a method of calculating the difference between two numbers. When you take a few objects away from a collection of objects, the group shrinks. For example, you purchased 9 cupcakes for your birthday celebration and your guests consumed 7 of them. You're down to two cupcakes now. This can be expressed as a subtraction expression: 9 - 7 = 2, which means "nine minus seven equals two." We get 2 when we subtract 7 from 9, (9 - 7). To determine the difference of 2, we used the subtraction operation on two numbers, 9 and 7.
Symbol for Subtraction:
Different symbols are used in mathematics. One of the most significant arithmetic symbols we use while subtracting is the subtraction symbol. We learned how to subtract two numbers 9 and 7 in the previous session. The sign (-) joins the two numbers and completes the specified phrase in this subtraction: (9 - 7 = 2). The negative sign is another name for this symbol.
Formula for Subtraction:
When subtracting two numbers, various terms from the subtraction expression are used:
- Minuend: The number that is deducted from the other number.
- Subtrahend: The number from which the minuend is to be subtracted.
- Difference: After subtracting the subtrahend from the minuend, the final result.
- Minuend - Subtrahend = Difference is the subtraction formula.
How To Solve Subtraction Problems?
One-digit integers can be subtracted easily, but for larger numbers, we divide them into columns based on their place values, such as ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on. While solving such problems, we may come across some scenarios that require borrowing and others that do not. Subtraction with regrouping is another name for subtraction with borrowing. We apply the regrouping approach when the minuend is less than the subtrahend. To make the minuend bigger than the subtrahend, we borrow 1 number from the preceding column while regrouping.
