Full-Form OF AICTE

A full form of AICTE is "All India Council For Technical Education" which was established in November 1945 as an advisory body to promote development in India in a coordinated and integrated manner. AICTE also conducted surveys of the facilities available for technical education. It achieved statutory status in 1987 and is the national council for technical education.

AICTE under the Ministry of Human Resource Development ensures proper planning and development of technical education system in India. It is an important section for the IAS exam and it is included in the GS-II section of the UPSC syllabus.

Objectives of AICTE

All India Statutory Council for Technical Education (AICTE) attained statutory status in 1987 under the AICTE Act. According to the National Policy on Education (1986), AICTE was established with the following objectives:

  • To plan, formulate and maintain norms and standards by acting as a statutory body.
  • Provide quality assurance through accreditation.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and provide funding for priority areas.
  • We are maintaining equality of certifications and awards.
  • To manage and develop the technical education system of India.

National Working Group & Its Role

A National Working Group was also constituted by the Indian government, which is under the Ministry of Human Resource Development and has included a national task force to examine the role of AICTE in the proliferation of various technical institutions, maintenance of standards, and other related matters. The National Task Force has also initiated the provision of statutory authority to AICTE along with restructuring and strengthening the necessary infrastructure to make it more efficient.

What is AICTE Act, 1987?

For the development of AICTE, the All India Council for Technical Education Act, 1987 was implemented to ensure coordinated development of the technical education system and proper planning in India. The AICTE Act was published by the Ministry of Law and Justice on 28 December 1987 in the Gazette of India Special Part II under Section 1 (Number 75).

As stated in the AICTE Act, 1987, the All India Council for Technical Education consists of a Chairman, a Member Secretary, and a Vice-Chairman. The central government of India appoints all three regulatory bodies. The current Member Secretary and Vice-Chairman of AICTE are Alok Prakash Mittal and M. P. Poonia.

Bureaus under AICTE

Technical Education for all India Council consist of 8 main bureaus: Planning and Coordination Bureau, Academic Bureau, University Bureau, Administration Bureau, Research, Institutional and Faculty Development Bureau, Approval Bureau, Finance Bureau, and e-Governance Bureau.

AICTE includes 10 Boards of Studies dealing with Technical, Professional, Undergraduate Engineering, Post Graduate, Architecture, Engineering and Research, Town and Country Planning, Pharmacy, Management, Applied Arts and Crafts, Hotel Management, and Food Technology Education.
