Full form of CAT

"Common Admission Test" is the full form of CAT. It is a computer-based examination conducted by IIMs to short-list candidates for a postgraduate programme. The test consists of three parts.

  • VARC (Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension)
  • DILR (Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning) a
  • QA (quantitative ability).

Overall, it is an online exam of three hours divided into one hour for each section. IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) have started this test and select candidates for various postgraduate and Ph.D. programs through the exam. The exam is conducted once a year.

A brief history of CAT

  • In August 2011, it was announced that IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and IISc (Indian Institute of Science) would now use CAT scores instead of JMET (Joint Management Entrance Test) to select candidates from the 2012-15 batch for their management programmes.
  • Till 2009, CAT was a written exam given every day for all candidates.
  • The pattern, number of problems, and length have changed significantly over the years.
  • On 1 May 2009, it was revealed that CAT would be a computer-based test.

Eligibility criteria of CAT

The applicant must meet the conditions below.

  • They should have Bachelor's Degree with not less than 50% or equivalent CGPA and 45% for SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe), and PWD (Persons with Disabilities) or DA (Disabled) category.
  • The degree should be awarded by any institutions established by an Act of the State or Central Legislatures in India or by other educational organizations established by law and also approved to be regarded as a University under the Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, with an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of an HRD, Government of India.
  • The Competitors entering the last year of their bachelor's studies or a similar qualifying exam and individuals who have met the precondition for the degree and are awaiting the results can also apply.

Examination pattern and duration of CAT

  • Each year, the exact pattern of the CAT exam differs.
  • A mock examination was provided for the 2018 CAT.
  • CAT is a computer-based exam consisting of three parts, Verbal and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning, and QA.
  • The divisions on QA and VARC were composed of 34 questions, while the portion on DI & LR had 32 problems.
  • Since CAT 2015, the distribution of questions has remained the same. Before this, questions were presented differently.
