Full form of MLA

The full form MLA is Member of Legislative. An MLA is a member appointed by the electorate of a district to the Legislative Assembly of the Government of India and the electorate nominates the MLA. In India, each state can have between four and nine MLAs for every MP (Member of Parliament) it has in the Lok Sabha. MLAs have different responsibilities according to their roles. Some have more than one role, for example, as an MLA, he can also be a CM and a Cabinet Minister.

Basic requirement for getting MLA

There are several basic criteria to be an MLA.

  • Nominee must be a resident of India.
  • The nominee should be at least twenty-five years old.
  • The nominee must be a voter of any constituency.

Duties of MLA

  • The MLA serves the grievances and aspirations of the people and brings them to the state government.
  • He will use many legislative tools for the good of the people of his local constituency.
  • He would raise the concerns of his region before the state government.
  • It will enable the best use of the LAD (Local area development) budget for the betterment of its constituents.

Qualification standards for MLA

The following qualifications are required to be elected to the position of MLA:

  • The person to be elected as MLA should be a citizen of India.
  • The person to be elected should not be less than 25 years of age (of the Legislative Assembly) and should not be less than 30 years of age before becoming a member of the Legislative Council.
  •  The individual must be an elector of any legislative assembly voting in that state demographically under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Overall, the person should be an elector of India.
  • An individual shall not hold any office of advantage under the Government of India or the Government of any State other than that of a Minister for the Union of India.
  • Under the Representation of the People Act 1951, an individual cannot remain an MLA if he has been convicted by a court or held responsible for a particular incident.
  • It is very necessary that he should not be confirmed by conviction for any crime or by imprisonment for two years or more.
