Full form of NET

National Eligibility Test is the full form of NET. NET is an important national entrance exam (UGC NET or NTA-UGC-NET) for post graduate students who want to pursue PhD or pursue their teaching career in India. It is an examination conducted to determine credentials for the rank of JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) and Assistant Professor in Indian Universities and Colleges.

The minimum requirement for technical and research teaching is NET. The above test is conducted in several subjects i.e. Computer Science and Engineering, Social Science, Computer Applications, Forensic Science, Political Science, History, Sociology, Home Science, Anthropology, Law, Education and many more. Literature subjects like English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Rajasthani, Gujarati, Marathi, French, Spanish, Japanese and so on.

A few points about NET

  • NET is conducted by UGC (University Grants Commission). UGC conducts this exam all over India.
  • The test was first conducted in 1989 and has been conducted twice a year since then.
  • UGC CSIR NET conducts science subjects. It is the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.
  • CBSE was conducting UGC NET exam till July 2018 but NTA (National Testing Agency) is conducting UGC National Eligibility Test from December 2018.
  • The primary objective of this test is to classify students for lectureships at university level as well as for Junior Research Fellowship.

NET Syllabus

The National Aptitude Test syllabus varies from subject to subject. It covers topics taught at graduate and post-graduate level. The main objective of NET is to test the teaching and research skills of the candidates.

Candidates appearing for the National Aptitude Test should prepare well for the exam. The best way to prepare for NET is to practice mock tests and previous year questions. Solving these questions will help you understand the exam pattern and also test your level of preparation.

Objectives of NET

NET has the following objectives:

  • To determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for the post of Assistant Professor or equivalent in Universities and Colleges across India.
  • Assess the candidates' teaching and research abilities.
  • NET is conducted in three stages: Paper I, Paper-II and Interview.
