Full Form of PLA

The full form of PLA in Science is Polylactic acid or polylactide. Now that you know the meaning of PLA, what is it exactly? PLA is a biodegradable and bioactive polyester that is formed with the help of lactic acid building blocks. 

The high-density version of PLA was developed by using lactide and through the scientific process of ring-opening polymerization. It was discovered by Wallace Carothers in 1932 while heating lactic acid under a vacuum through removing condensed water. 

Polylactic acid is a thermoplastic monomer which is derived from renewable, organic or natural sources such as corn starch. The production of PLA is pretty cost-effective. 

Applications of PLA

As we mentioned earlier, PLA is biodegradable which makes it suitable for fashioning plastic film, bottles, and biodegradable medical devices, including screws, pins, plates, and rods.
