Chapter 8: Body Movements

The eighth chapter of Class 6 Science, Body Movements, helps students understand how living organisms, especially humans and animals, are able to move. Movement is essential for daily activities like walking, running, bending, or lifting, and this chapter explains the scientific basis behind it.

The chapter starts by describing the human skeletal system, which provides shape, support, and protection to the body. It introduces the different types of bones and joints that allow movement. For example, the hinge joint in the elbow allows back-and-forth movement, the ball-and-socket joint in the shoulder allows rotation, and the pivot joint in the neck allows turning. The fixed joints, like those in the skull, provide protection but no movement.

The chapter also explains the role of muscles in movement. Muscles work in pairs—when one contracts, the other relaxes—to create smooth motion. Simple activities such as bending the arm or walking are linked to the functioning of bones and muscles together.

Apart from humans, the chapter explores how different animals move. For example, birds fly using wings, fish swim using fins, earthworms move by muscles and bristles, and snakes slither using their flexible backbone. With NCERT Solutions for Class 6 Science, students can easily learn step-by-step answers to textbook exercises related to skeletons, joints, and movements. The NCERT Exemplar for Class 6 Science Solutions provides additional conceptual questions such as why earthworms need muscles for movement or why fish can swim faster than humans.

Important points of the chapter include:

  • Skeletal system and its functions.

  • Types of joints: hinge, ball-and-socket, pivot, and fixed joints.

  • Role of muscles in movement.

  • Different ways animals move.

By practicing NCERT and Exemplar solutions, students gain clarity on how structure and function work together in living beings. This builds strong basics for biology and anatomy in higher classes.
