The time period of a wave is calculated using the period formula. It is the amount of time it takes for a wave to travel from one peak to the next. A periodic function is one that has its values recur at regular intervals or periods. If f(x + p) = f(x), the period of a function f(x) is p for every x.

A function f(x) will be periodic with period p, according to the definition of a period of a function, therefore f (x + p) = f (x) for every p > 0. Sin x, cos x, csc x, and sec x = 2 have the same period. tan x and cot x have the same period. As the frequency of the wave rises, the period of the wave decreases. The formula for a trigonometric function's period (T) is as follows:

  • Period, T = Period of parent function/|Coefficient of x|
  • Frequency, F = 1/Period
