Consider a line that connects the coordinates A((x)1, (y)1) and B((x)2, ((y)2). The ratio of the difference in y coordinates to the difference in x coordinates is the slope of this line. The same is true for the increase over run formula, which is as follows:

Rise over run formula / slope (m) = (y2−y1) / (x2−x1)= Δy/Δx

Here,

  • Rise = difference between y-coordinates of points A & B = (y)2 - (y)1 = Δy
  • Run = difference between x-coordinates of points A & B = (x)2 - (x)1 = Δx

Rules of the Rise Over Run Formula

The rise over run formula can be used to calculate the slope of a straight line, which can be negative, positive, or zero.

  • The straight line is a rising line with a positive slope if it travels from left to right and upwards.
  • If a straight line runs from left to right and downwards, it is a falling line with a negative slope.
  • The slope will be zero if the straight line is horizontal. If the straight line is vertical, the slope will be undefined.
