About Slope Formula

The slope formula is used to determine a line's inclination or steepness. It may be used to calculate the slope of any line by dividing the change in the y-axis by the change in the x-axis. Slope of a line is defined as change in its "y" coordinate in relation to the change in its "x" coordinate.

What do you mean by Slope Formula?

The slope formula is a method for calculating a line's steepness and determining how much it is slanted. x and y coordinates of points on the line can be used to compute the slope of the lines. In other words, it is ratio of y-axis change to x-axis change.

Slope Formula

Formula to calculate slope is given as,

m = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)= Δy/Δx

Here, m is slope of the line, x1, x2 are coordinates of x-axis, and y1, y2 are coordinates of y-axis.

Slope Equation

The slope formula, as we saw in the previous section, may be used to calculate the slope of any line. As a result, the equation for determining this slope can be written as,

  1. m = rise/run = tanθ = Δy/Δx= (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)
  2. Here, m is slope, Δy is change in y-coordinates, Δx is change in x-coordinates, θ is angle made by line with positive x-axis
  3. The slope of any line can also be calculated using the line equation as follows:
  4. y = mx + b
  5. Here, m is slope of line, b is y-intercept of line
