Introduction to Chapter 2 Socialism in Europe and the Russian Revolution

Medieval ages around the world were dominated by conservative societies that were ruled by aristocrats and oligarchs. The need for equal rights and demand for a society where the privileges were awarded based on merit and not based on birth led to the development of an idea called Socialism. The chapter explains the coming of socialism to Europe, its impact and its consequences. It puts forward the thoughts of Karl Marx, Robert Owen, and Louis Blanc who supported the cause of forming a society where the resources were divided according to the needs of the people. It explores the coming of socialism to Russia, the expulsion of the Tsar and the formation of Dumas. Socialists were also divided in their opinions concerning workers and peasants. This led to a rift between them forming two major groups, namely, the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks. The chapter explains how the Bolsheviks got control of most parts of Russia and the events that led to a civil war. It focuses on the policies followed by Stalin post-Lenin’s death and how they led to Russian peasants turning against the government.
