Full form of ATS

The full form of ATS is the Anti-Terrorist Squad. ATS is a special police service operating in various states of India, including UP (Uttar Pradesh), Maharashtra, Kerala,  Rajasthan, Gujarat, WB (West Bengal), and Bihar. It is run by senior officers of IPS Maharashtra. There have been many acts of terrorism in the country that have been stopped by the unit. It is a task force specializing in combating terrorist actions and threats.

History of ATS

  • The ATS was established in 1989 in Maharashtra by Mumbai Additional Commissioner of Police Aftab Ahmed Khan, known as A.A. Khan: Khan.
  • He was influenced by the counter-terrorism strategies of the Los Angeles Police Department's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) units.
  • Since its inception in 1990, ATS officials have received 23 awards for bravery. On 26 November 2008, the Mumbai ATS participated in hostage rescue operations at various locations in Mumbai, Maharashtra, including the 5-star Taj and Trident hotels in the Oberoi.
  • After the incidents, it appointed children above 12 as ATC officers, especially in Mumbai, who underwent secret training.

Primary duties of ATS

  • Collect information on anti-national elements
  • Coordinate and exchange details with intelligence agencies such as IB and RAW.
  • Track and eliminate the actions of terrorists, mafias, and other organized crime syndicates
  • Detecting and disrupting counterfeit currency and narcotics fraud.

Working Area of the ATS

The anti-terrorism unit is mainly employed to fight back anti-national activities in the country. He protects his countrymen from a terrorist attack, defuses bombs, and tracks landmines. ATS travels to foreign countries in disguise to gather intelligence on destructive plans and related developments. If a terrorist movement is detected, the ATS, in cooperation with RAO and ZS, will foil the action.
