Full form of CFL

The full form of CFLs is “Compact fluorescent lamps”. CFL is an energy-efficient light bulb that consumes much less energy than conventional light bulbs. It is made of a glass tube along with two electrodes. The glass tube contains a mixture of argon and mercury vapor and is filled with phosphorus on the inner surface.

History of CFL

  • There is a significant revolution in light history for CFL, and the CFL is a generation of Electric Lamps. And history was produced in the 1890 Century by Peter Cooper Hewitt.
  • However, at the time, the CFL price was supposed to be high, so the CFL was also redesigned in 1939 and cheaply.
  • The CFL was updated again in 1976, and the cost became cheap.

Working Principle of CFL

CFLs have different paths for generating light than incandescents. An electric current passes through a wire filament in bright light. It heats the filament to create light, just like incandescent filament - the current in a CFL is carried through a tube that contains the mixture of argon and mercury vapor. The current activates mercury vapor, which generates UV light.

Advantages of CFL

  • It uses less energy than incandescent lamps, between 60-80 percent.
  • It lasts longer than standard lamps and uses less energy, so it’s much less costly in the long run.
  • It helps reduce CO2 emissions as CFL produces fewer CO2 emissions than an incandescent lamp.
  • CFLs are versatile and highly efficient. They arrive in various sizes, shapes & capacities to suit multiple home decors and objectives.
  • They can also be conveniently used in different light fixtures, including ceiling lamps, table lamps, dimmer lamps, etc.
  • It generates less heat because much of the energy is transferred into visible light, meaning that much less heat is transferred.

Types of CFLs Available in the Market

Presently there are two types that you can buy from:

  1. Integrated: In this Compact Fluorescent Lamp (check CFL meaning), one single unit is designed using the electronic ballast, the bayonet fitting, and the tube.
  2. Non-Integrated: This also consists of the electronic ballast that is fixed permanently in the luminaire. Since this is not combined with the bulb, only the bulb needs to be changed when it expires.
