Full form of EDP

Electronic Data Processing is the full form of EDP. It relates to business data operations, handling archival records, and computer use involving the electronic transfer of information from paper to electronic format. The term DP (data processing) was used to create it. It is synonymous with IS (information system or service) or MIS (management information system or service). The three processing levels are as follows.

  • Data is located through processing by input devices such as digitizers, keyboards, scanners, and so on.
  • The information is managed by software programs that usually include translation, code implementation, equations, verification, etc.
  • The information reaches the customer after processing audio, messages, video, etc.

History of EDP

  1. The first commercial trading system in the UK was developed and manufactured by LEO (Lyons Electronic Office) in 1951.
  2. It wasn't easy, and it took longer to prepare commercial information in real-time.
  3. At that time, information could only be placed through input processing with a punched card or tape. The output of these punch cards should be especially needed.
  4. Independent companies initially developed the technology with reference to data processing technology.
  5. With the invention of microprocessors, punched cards stopped working, making it possible to run and process information digitally using simple desktop computers.

Advantages of EDP

  1. Through EDP, it is possible to retrieve stored and organized data efficiently.
  2. It allows the user to automatically and quickly create or generate summary documents such as reports, invoices, and statements.
  3. The total long-term costs of organizing and organizing information are lower by EDP.]
  4. In EDP, duplicative efforts are significantly reduced or terminated by errors such as multiple entries.
  5. The EDP collects the correct data, and the EDP tool decides its accuracy.
  6. It offers different storage devices like secondary and primary memory.
  7. The EDP system stays away from social work, mainly during the procedure.

Uses of EDP

  • There are different uses of the technology-
  • It is used in telecom companies to format bills.
  • It is used to maintain student records in schools.
  • The technology is also used in various supermarkets to record the products and prices.
