The full form of fax is facsimile. It is the telephone transmission of scanned copies of images and text printed on paper over a telephone line between two people. A fax machine is a device to transmit originals electronically or replicates scanned documents over a telephone network.
Fax processes the scanned text or image as one solid visual image and converts it to a bitmap. It then transmits it through an audio frequency through the telephone system. The fax machine deduces the tones on the receiving end, reconstructs the image, and prints a hard copy.
History of the FAX
In the twenty-first century, fax technology was rendered obsolete with the advent of e-mail with technological advancements. A brief history of the FAX is as follows:
- In 1843, Alexander Bain invented fax technology. He patented his "Electric Printing Telegraph."
- Then Frederick Bakewell improved upon Bain's invention and produced the telefax.
- Giovanni Caselli invented the "Pantelegraph" in 1861. It was the first commercially used telefax machine and introduced the first commercial telefax service.
Working Principle of FAX
- Fax is a complete set of scanners and printers.
- The scanner first scans the page and converts it to a solid graphic image, then converts it to a bitmap and sends it over the phone line via audio frequency.
- The receiving device interprets the signals and prints the reconstructed image on paper.
Why is email preferred over FAX?
- The quality of data sent over the internet is better than Fax.
- Sending data over the internet is cheaper than sending it over Fax.
- No need for additional hardware for sending data over the internet, unlike Fax.
- There is no need to be a person present while sending data. It is automatically saved in his email id, and he can use it whenever he needs.
- It can transfer data faster and more efficiently than a FAX machine, which saves you time and effort.
- The fax machine may experience a paper jam which can damage the original document.
- You can send the data to multiple people in a click by using the CC or BCC email fields.
